Desert Speed School athletes are leading the way for several girls’ basketball teams, with the high school state playoffs getting started this week. 3A #1 Sabino has a first-round bye, with sophomore Kiya Dorroh leading the team in rebounds. Eastside rival #4 Tanque Verde also has earned a first-round bye, and has guards Ella Berg and Emma Morris leading the team in assists, while All-American nominee Nikya Orange leads the team in both scoring and rebounds.
At the 5A level, #13 Rincon/UHS has already advanced to the second round with a win over #4 Desert Mountain. The team gets solid guard play from Kendall Jeong and leading rebounder Edie Cotton.
