Desert Speed School athlete Avery Nielson pitched a nine-strikeout, 2-run performance for Sabino to help lead the Sabercats to the 3A State Championship, their fourth consecutive for the program. As reported by Andy Morales, Nielson survived a two-run home run by fellow Speed School athlete Morgan Faunce of Empire late in the game to finish with a 19-1 record on the mound. The matchup between Sabino and Empire was yet another epic postseason showdown between the schools, and was finally played on Saturday after being rescheduled multiple times due to weather/field conditions.
