XC Preview: Salpointe’s Wild A Top Returner

Desert Speed School athlete and Salpointe distance runner Kylie Wild will be one of the top returning cross-country runners in the 2020 season, as sportswriter Andy Morales notes. Amidst scheduling uncertainties due to COVID, Wild is nonetheless preparing to lead a Salpointe team following her 5th-place state finish as a freshman in 2019.

Coronavirus-related issues have also shaken up the competitive nature of the upcoming season, as many Native reservations – among the hardest-hit areas worldwide during the pandemic – have unfortunately had to cancel their fall seasons completely. These communities tend to produce some of the strongest distance runners at all levels statewide, as Morales notes, so the loss of these schools in 2020 leaves the field wide open for runners and teams with state title aspirations.
