A number of cross-country state championship races took place last weekend, with the boys’ and girls’ high school races running their state meets at the annual Cave Creek location. The middle-school and elementary state races also took place, put on by 4Peaks Racing and held at Asante Community Park in Surprise.
The middle-school and elementary races saw some top finishes for Desert Speed School athletes, highlighted by John Garcia Gamez’s state championship run in the Boys’ 7-8th grade race. Meanwhile, Finley Johnson and Sea Garcia Gamez went 2-3 in a highly competitive Girls’ 4-6th grade race. In the middle school girls’ event, Isla Cerepak secured a top-20 finish with 13th overall.
At the high school level, Zoe Portewig (Tanque Verde) took 16th in the girls DIII race, and Aric Accetta (Salpointe) finished 14th in the boys’ event.
