With the soccer postseason well underway, five teams have advanced to the semifinal round of the state championship. On the girls side, traditional powerhouse teams steamrolled their way through their quarterfinal matchups: 5A #2 Ironwood Ridge (Madison Thacker and captain Emma McCormick), 4A #2 Salpointe (Captain Lauren Bollinger, Isabella Almazan, Sydney Lenhart, Kate Connelly, Paloma Teran, Grace Kaufman-Fuller, and Catalina Alvarado), 4A #4 Catalina Foothills (Captains Meghan Hawkins and Hannah Draper, as well as Dania Shabat, Sophie Fell, and Becca Burrows).
On the boys’ side, 3A #12 Sabino (Ben Kopiec, Dylan Rayo, Ryan Spitzer) knocked off yet another top-seeded team for the second consecutive week. They look to do the same this Friday in a matchup with #1 AZ College Prep. 4A #10 Salpointe (Ellis Jacob, Andy Roche) also played the spoiler, knocking off a #2-seed in a thrilling double-overtime 3-2 final.
