Girls Soccer: 11 Athletes in Semifinals

Three local teams with 11 Desert Speed School athletes between them have advanced to the state semifinals to be played this weekend. Kate Connelly scored what would prove to be the game-winner in the 68th minute to help her Salpointe team and fellow Speed School athletes Sydney Lenhart, Grace Kaufman-Fuller, and Catalina Alvarado advance to the semifinal round with a 1-0 victory over Prescott. On the opposing side of the 4A bracket, cross-town rival Catalina Foothills and Speed School athletes Dania Shabat, Sophie Fell, Hannah Draper, Emma Nance,  and Becca Burrows also advanced to the semis with a convincing 4-0 win over last year’s runner-up Flagstaff. Wins by both Salpointe and Foothills this weekend would make for an all-Tucson state championship match.

At the 5A level, #1 ranked Ironwood Ridge and Speed School athletes Lexi Los and Katie Jeffers had a nail-biter in their win against Cactus Shadow. Scoreless through regulation, the Lady Hawks eventually took the victory 6-5 in penalties. Full story…
